About Wexford Creek Seniors Community

Laurie Schellenberg, our Site Leader at Wexford Creek, has lived on Vancouver Island for 5 years working as a registered Social Worker in Community Health Services, in Cowichan District Hospital, and in a Long Term Care facility in Duncan where she also served as Interim General Manager.  She is originally from Manitoba where she was a Care Coordinator for Home Care which led to running four facilities on a ‘campus of care.’ Her experience and social work skills are an asset in dealing with families and her collaborative management style has been a good fit for Wexford Creek. Laurie is married with 3 “mostly grown” sons and 2 grandchildren. She and her husband love to travel and have explored Canada well, as well as many other parts of the world. 

Shawn grew up in Port Alberni and was always involved in sports. He attended university in Nanaimo in the Recreation Management program with a focus on Sports Recreation. He started working with children and youth with the Boys and Girls Club and at the YMCA in Victoria, both in management roles. His career took a turn when, in order to move back to Nanaimo, his wife applied for a Recreation Manager position for him at a seniors community in Nanaimo. Thus began his recreation work with seniors for the past 16 years. Shawn continues to lead an active lifestyle with mountain biking, running, kayaking and golf. Shawn is married to his wife Tisha and has two boys, Connor and Tyler, with whom he enjoys as much time as possible and says this helps to keep him young! Shawn is also a “die hard” Montreal Canadiens fan – and has a seat from the Forum in his living room.

Ray was born and raised in the Philippines and came to Canada in 1984 as a child. He completed his Culinary Arts degree and Red Seal certificate from Vancouver Community College and worked in numerous hotels and restaurants in BC, including working alongside Chef Michael Smith (from Celebrity Chef Canada) during the Olympics at BC Place in 2010. He is currently studying Food Services Nutrition Management and plans to complete the program in 2025. Ray enjoys cooking for his wife and son, attending his son’s sports events, catering for the Filipino community, and staying fit so he can live a long healthy life with some grandchildren! Ray started painting in 2006, after being inspired by Bob Ross, while working on the Sunshine Coast – he has watched every episode to learn the techniques and then ‘does own thing’. The residents and staff at Wexford Creek love Ray’s creativity and great sense of humour!
